At the beginning of every school year I test each student on several words they should have learned in kindergarten.
I called Abby over to the back table and asked her to read me the list of words. Here's how the conversation went:
Me: Abby, can you read me these words?
Abby: Um . . . I, a . . .
Me: Good! What about the next one?
Abby: Well, I used to know those words because I had some cards from kindergarten with those words on them.
Me: Really? So you probably know them, right?
Abby: Yeah. Except that I think my mom threw the cards away. So now I don't know them anymore!
Thanks Mom . . . nothing like throwing away those summer flashcards.
